ENVE SES 3.4 Wheelset
The ENVE SES 3.4 is the wheel ENVE points to when someone asks for a single road wheelset that does everything. The current generation merged the old SES 3.4 and the SES 3.4 AR into one rim, so you get a 39mm front and 43mm rear that are aero enough for fast group rides, light enough for long climbs, and wide enough to run the high-volume tubeless tires that road and all-road bikes now expect.
ENVE describes the SES 3.4 as the one wheel quiver, and that framing is fair. It is the SES model with the widest range of use, from crit racing to a paved century that turns onto a dirt road. It is not the lightest SES (that is the SES 2.3) and not the fastest in a straight line (the SES 4.5), but it is the one most riders should buy if they only buy one.
What sets it apart from its siblings is balance. The rim depth is deep enough to matter aerodynamically yet shallow enough that crosswinds are a non-event, and the 25mm inner width gives 28 to 32mm tires the support they need.
Design and construction
The SES 3.4 rim measures 25mm internally front and rear. ENVE optimizes it aerodynamically around a 27 to 28mm labeled tubeless tire, sets a 27mm minimum, and caps pressure at 80 psi (5.5 bar) for that minimum size. The bead is hookless with ENVE's Wide Hookless Bead, a broad leading edge designed to give the tire a forgiving surface when it bottoms out on a pothole. Like every hookless ENVE rim, the SES 3.4 requires tubeless-ready tires. Front and rear rims are different shapes: the front is tuned for crosswind stability and the rear to recapture airflow behind the frame. Rim weight is 370 grams front and 378 grams rear.
Both wheels use 24 straight-pull spokes into the INNERDRIVE Premium hub. The Premium hub carries an oversized 42mm steel ratchet with interchangeable 40, 60, 80 and 100-tooth options, shipping with the 60-tooth (6 degree) road ratchet. Bearings are steel with ENVE's Perfect Preload adjustment-free system. Anti-twist spoke holes keep bladed spokes aligned during tensioning, and the hub is shaped so spoke crossings are silent.
The SES 3.4 is centerlock disc, 12x100 front and 12x142 rear, 700c only. ENVE lists a complete front wheel at 650 grams and a rear at 770 grams with tape and valve, and a wheelset weight of 1,380 grams plus or minus 3 percent. ERD is 578mm front and 571mm rear; tape width is 29mm.
How it rides
Where this wheel earns its reputation is on rides with a bit of everything. The 39mm front is calm in gusts, the 43mm rear holds speed on rollers, and a 28mm tire at road pressure on that 25mm inner width feels planted through fast corners. The straight-pull INNERDRIVE build is stiff enough that hard sprints go to the road rather than into rotor rub.
On rough pavement and hard-packed dirt, the SES 3.4 shows the benefit of the hookless bead and the wider rim: you can drop pressure without the squirm you would get from a narrow rim, and the wheel absorbs chatter better than its depth suggests. It is a wheel for the rider who races on Saturday and does a mixed-surface adventure ride on Sunday and does not want to swap wheels between them.

This version
This page is the SES 3.4 Wheelset itself, not a custom build. The choices on this page are decal color: Black, White; driver type: None (front wheel), Shimano HG, SRAM XDR, Campagnolo N3W, Shimano Micro Spline. This listing is the complete wheelset - front and rear together, not a single wheel.
Fit and compatibility
The SES 3.4 is sold as individual wheels: pick Front or Rear, and choose black or white decals. Rear wheels are available with Shimano HG, SRAM XDR, Campagnolo N3W, or Shimano Micro Spline freehub bodies, which makes the SES 3.4 a straightforward match for road, gravel, and mullet drivetrains.
Fitment is 700c, centerlock disc, 12x100 front and 12x142 rear thru-axle. ENVE does not include centerlock lockrings with this wheel.
What ENVE says about testing
ENVE Composites designs, tests and manufactures its carbon rims in an 80,000 square foot facility in Ogden, Utah. ENVE describes the site as having manufacturing, assembly, design, R&D, test lab, customer support and the business team under one roof, and says it has been committed to US manufacturing since 2007. Every SES rim is handmade in Ogden, and ENVE states that a new lay-up technician undergoes six months of training before certification. Wheels are built to order, which ENVE says minimizes waste and allows custom hub, spoke and decal options.
ENVE publishes its impact test program in detail. Three in-house standards are used: a standard impact test (since 2007) that drops a weight onto both rim walls to simulate square edge hits, with drop heights of 10 inches for XC, 12 inches for trail and 14 inches for gravity rims; a single sided impact test (since 2014) that loads only one rim wall, at 5, 6, 8 and 10 inches for XC, trail, gravity and DH race; and an every spoke hole impact test (since 2021) in which the wheel is rotated after each hit so every spoke hole is struck until first visible damage, which can mean more than 100 impacts on one rim. ENVE reports its current M Series rims outscore the previous generation on that cumulative fatigue score by 10 to 47 percent depending on model.
ENVE's hookless rims use a Wide Hookless Bead, a wider, more forgiving surface at the leading edge of the rim that ENVE says dissipates impact energy and reduces the likelihood of pinch flatting a tubeless tire. ENVE states the hookless design allows machined metal tooling to hold a precise bead seat diameter that meets the ETRTO requirement. In the eight years since its first hookless road wheels, ENVE reports more than 1,000 tubeless tire tests; for a tire to be listed as approved it must hold 120 psi, or 165 percent of the ETRTO/ISO reference pressure, well beyond the ISO 4210 requirement of 110 percent for five minutes. Maximum pressures are published per model: SES 3.4 and SES 4.5 are rated 80 psi with 27 to 29 mm tires and 67 psi with tires over 30 mm; SES 2.3 and SES 6.7 are rated 90 psi with a 25 mm tire. ENVE advises always defaulting to the lower of the rim and tire maximum. ENVE does not publish a wheel specific rider weight limit; its tire pressure guidance suggests riders in the 240 to 250 lb range move to 30 to 32 mm tires to stay within pressure limits, and its complete bikes carry a 300 lb rider limit.
The Smart ENVE System (SES) is built on the Real-World Fast philosophy developed with aerodynamicist Simon Smart since 2009. Rather than optimizing for a steady wind tunnel condition, ENVE develops rim shapes for rapid airflow reattachment after gusts, and states that SES wheels are tested at 20 mph and 30 mph across a weighted range of wind angles, with a shallower front rim for crosswind stability and a deeper rear rim for reduced drag. The SES PRO line was developed with UAE Team Emirates and Tadej Pogacar under World Tour requirements, which ENVE notes include compliance with the governing bodies, and ENVE's Custom Road bike is stated to be UCI compliant and approved for UCI sanctioned events. The INNERDRIVE hub in current SES and G Series wheels uses a 42 mm oversized ratchet positioned over the bearings with Perfect Preload wave washers, and ENVE says it has been proven by UAE Team Emirates over tens of thousands of World Tour miles.
ENVE covers rims and components with a Limited Lifetime Warranty against defects in materials and workmanship for the original owner (hub internals and bearings one year); subsequent owners receive five years from the manufacture date. A separate crash replacement program replaces rims and components at no charge for the first three years from purchase, with a prorated discount after that, for original owners with proof of purchase. ENVE says it does not design products to be indestructible, and that labor and shipping are not included.

SES 3.4 questions
What tire sizes work on the SES 3.4?
ENVE optimizes the SES 3.4 around a 27 to 28mm labeled tubeless tire, with 27mm as the minimum and 80 psi as the maximum pressure at that size. Wider tires at lower pressure are fine within the tire maker's hookless guidance.
Is the SES 3.4 okay for gravel?
ENVE positions the current SES 3.4 as a road or gravel wheel, having merged the old 3.4 AR into it. For rough, rocky gravel with 40mm plus tires the G23 or G SES 4.5 are purpose-built for that.
Which freehub options does the SES 3.4 rear offer?
Shimano HG, SRAM XDR, Campagnolo N3W, and Shimano Micro Spline.
How does the SES 3.4 differ from the SES 4.5?
The SES 3.4 is 39/43mm deep and about 70 grams lighter per set; the SES 4.5 is 50/56mm and faster on flat, fast courses. Both share the 25mm inner width and INNERDRIVE Premium hubs.
Does ProWheelBuilder make the SES 3.4?
No. ENVE manufactures the SES 3.4 in Ogden, Utah. We sell it as an authorized reseller and can also build the SES 3.4 rim onto a different hub in our custom program.
Do I need to buy lockrings for the SES 3.4?
Yes, if you do not have a set. ENVE ships the SES 3.4 without centerlock lockrings.
