Nextie Rollingstar III Road Rear Centerlock Disc Hub

The Nextie Rollingstar III is the hub Nextie puts under its lightest road wheels, and it is a different animal from the Rollingstar II: ceramic bearings, a 45-tooth star ratchet as standard, a shell machined down to about 100g front and 130g rear, and straight-pull flanges drilled for 20 or 24 spokes. This page covers the Nextie Rollingstar III Road Rear Centerlock Disc Hub, in 12 x 100 front and 12 x 142 rear road spacing with a centerlock rotor mount.

At about 230g for the pair it sits with the boutique European road hubs on the scale, and it is the hub we build into Nextie Alpha and Ripple road wheel sets when the customer wants the lightest carbon road wheel the catalog can make. Nextie makes the hub; ProWheelBuilder is an independent wheel builder in Georgia, not the manufacturer, and we sell it only as a front and rear pair inside a complete Nextie road wheel set.

Design and construction

The Rollingstar III keeps the star-ratchet freehub, two toothed rings engaging every tooth at once, and steps the ring up to 45 teeth for eight degrees of pickup, quick enough for cyclocross starts and criterium corners. The bearings are ceramic hybrids: steel races and silicon-nitride balls, harder and rounder than steel, with noticeably less drag. The shell is machined thinner than the Rollingstar II's with low straight-pull flanges for a light, aero road wheel, the freehub body swaps between HG, XD, XDR and Micro Spline without tools, and the rotor mounts by centerlock.

Twenty or 24 spokes is the choice: 20 for lighter riders on a race wheel, 24 for everyday road use and heavier riders.

How it rides

Spin a Rollingstar III and you understand what ceramic bearings are for: it feels frictionless. On the road it rolls with less drag than any other hub in the catalog at its price, the 45-tooth ratchet picks up quickly out of a corner, and the low straight-pull flanges build into a stiff, even, aero wheel. It is a race and fast-road hub; for gravel, touring and heavier riders the Rollingstar II with 28 spokes is the sensible choice.

This version

This version is the centerlock hub in Thru Axle 12x142mm, drilled for 20h, 24h, about 130g, in black. Those are the only things that differ between the versions of the Rollingstar III; the shell, bearings and seals are the same.

This is the centerlock Rollingstar III: the rotor sits on a spline and a lockring holds it, which saves weight over six bolts and makes swapping rotors a one-tool job. If your rotors are 6-bolt, a centerlock adapter fits them, or choose the 6-bolt version of the same hub.

Sizes, fit and compatibility

The Nextie Rollingstar III Road Rear Centerlock Disc Hub is sold here only as a front and rear pair inside a complete Nextie road wheel set. It comes in 20 and 24 hole, straight-pull, 12 x 100mm front and 12 x 142mm rear thru-axle, centerlock rotor, with HG, XD, XDR or Micro Spline freehub bodies on the rear. We build most Rollingstar III wheels with Sapim CX-Ray straight-pull spokes and alloy or brass nipples.

It pairs with the Nextie road rims on this site, the Supreme Alpha and Ripple and the Premium ARX, CRX and RX; choose the rim first and the configurator offers the matching hub pair.

Build a wheel around it

Offered for gravel and road disc and touring builds in our Custom Wheel Program. Start with the Nextie Rollingstar III Road Rear Centerlock Disc Hub and the configurator pins it for you, then checks each choice you make against it.

How Nextie tests its hubs

Nextie publishes engineering drawings rather than lab figures for the Rollingstar hubs: full profile drawings with flange diameters, center-to-flange distances, spoke hole diameters and spoke hole offsets for every axle standard, and exploded-view drawings that name every part down to the bearing codes (6802 and 15267 cartridge bearings, AL7075 weldless-tube axles, AL6061 forged shells and end caps). The dimensions on this page are taken from those drawings.

Nextie states that its factory in Xiamen runs a quality-control framework from raw-material inspection through in-process control to finished-product testing, holds SGS test certification and industry production-system certifications, and has held UCI wheel approval since September 2021 for wheels built on its rims. The Rollingstar II uses stainless-steel cartridge bearings and the Rollingstar III ceramic-hybrid bearings; both are sold with Nextie's hub warranty and a full spare-parts list.

Certifications

  • UCI wheel approval — Held by Nextie since September 2021 for wheels built on its road and gravel rims (NXT45RC 2021, Alpha 50 October 2025, Alpha 40 May 2026, Alpha 45G and 55G July 2026); no hub-specific certification exists (source)
  • SGS test certification and production-system certifications — Stated by Nextie for its factory (source)

Nextie publishes those results; ProWheelBuilder builds the hub into a wheel and does not test it in a lab.

Building it at ProWheelBuilder

Nextie makes the Rollingstar III; ProWheelBuilder is an independent custom wheel builder in Georgia and not the manufacturer. Spokes are cut from the ERD we measure on the actual rim, the wheel comes up in stages on a tensiometer, and it is stress-relieved and trued before it goes in the box; tape and a valve go on if you ask.

The configurator filters to what fits, crosses out what is not made, and prices the build as you go.

Warranty

Manufacturer's warranty. Nextie warrants this product against defects in materials and workmanship. The duration, conditions and claim process are set by Nextie and can change without notice, so ask us and we will confirm the current terms before you buy.

ProWheelBuilder. Our one-year wheel warranty applies to any wheel we build around this part, alongside whatever the manufacturer offers. Inside that year, broken spokes are replaced no matter how they broke, and the wheel labor is ours - truing, re-tensioning or a full rebuild. A rim or hub failure that the maker covers, we claim for you and see through; one the maker declines, we answer with an eligible replacement at 25% off current retail. Shipping both ways is yours, and components you supply yourself fall outside this cover.

Full terms are on our Policies & Warranty page.

Rollingstar III Road Rear Centerlock Disc Hub questions

Will my rotors fit this hub?

This is the centerlock version, so a splined centerlock rotor drops on and a lockring holds it - one tool, no six bolts to torque or lose. If your rotors are 6-bolt they will fit with a centerlock adapter, or take the 6-bolt version of the same hub, which is a separate listing.

Can I buy the Rollingstar III on its own?

No. Nextie hubs are sold here only as a front and rear pair inside a complete Nextie wheel set we build.

Rollingstar III or Rollingstar II?

III for the lightest road race wheel, with ceramic bearings and a 45-tooth ratchet; II for gravel, trail, touring and heavier riders, with 28-hole drilling and colors.

How many points of engagement does the Rollingstar III have?

45 teeth, which is eight degrees.

Does it need special spokes?

Yes, straight-pull spokes; the configurator filters the list automatically when you pick this hub.

Is ProWheelBuilder the manufacturer of the Nextie Rollingstar III Road Rear Centerlock Disc Hub?

We are not. Nextie manufactures the hub; ProWheelBuilder's part is the wheel: measuring, lacing, tensioning and truing it here in Georgia.

Which axle spacing does it fit?

Thru Axle 12x142mm Rear. Measure between the inside faces of your dropouts if you are unsure, or text us.

Not sure? Text or leave a voicemail on 470-253-0929 or email info@prowheelbuilder.com — you will be talking to the people who build the wheels.
