Velocity Race Road Front Black Hub

This page covers the Velocity Race Road Front Black Hub, a 100mm front or 130mm rear quick-release road hub for rim-brake bikes.

Rim-brake road hubs in colors are hard to find now, and the Race Road hub is the one we build when a customer wants a classic road or fixed-gear wheel on a Deep V, Fusion, A23 or Quill that matches from hub to rim.

The Race Road hub is sold here only inside a wheel we build. Choose the rim, spokes and nipples in the configurator and the finished wheel ships from Georgia laced, tensioned and trued by hand.

Design and construction

The Race hubshell is machined from aluminum bar with conventional J-bend flanges and anodized in the color range. Bearings are sealed cartridge units in common sizes, replaceable with a bearing press when they eventually wear.

A front hub is a bearing carrier with flanges, and that is the whole job of the front Velocity Race Road hub: two sealed bearings on a stiff axle, end caps for your fork's standard, and flanges spaced to give the spokes a good bracing angle on the rotor side. There is nothing to engage and nothing to swap. Everything written about freehubs and engagement applies to the rear hub only; what you get up front is the same shell quality and the same seals without any of the moving parts.

How it rides

The main reason to choose the Race hub over a DT Swiss 350 or Bitex is the color match with the rims, and a wheel built that way looks like it was made as a set because it was.

On the road or the trail the front hub's job is to disappear: spin freely, keep water out, and hold the flanges still so the wheel tracks where you point it. The front Velocity Race Road hub does that with the same bearings and seals as the rear and none of the rear's complexity, and because a front wheel carries less load and no torque it stays true longer than the rear on the same rim. When the rear finally needs a look, the front usually does not.

This version

This version is the rim-brake hub in QR 5x100mm, drilled for 20h, 24h, 28h, about 80g, in black. Those are the only things that differ between the versions of the Velocity Race Road hub; the shell, bearings and seals are the same.

This is the rim-brake Velocity Race Road hub, with no rotor mount at all: a lighter, simpler shell for road, track and classic frames that stop on the rim. It builds into the lightest wheel the model can make and it is the version to choose for a rim-brake bike; the disc versions of the same hub have their own listings.

Sizes, fit and compatibility

The Velocity Race Road Front Black Hub comes in the drillings listed on this page in 100mm front and 130mm rear quick-release spacing. It takes J-bend spokes in any gauge; we build most Race Road hub wheels with Sapim Laser, D-Light or CX-Ray spokes or DT Competition and Aerolite.

It pairs naturally with the Velocity Deep V, Fusion, A23, Quill and Aerohead, and with any other rim-brake rim in the catalog that matches its drilling. The configurator recommends spoke count and lacing from your bike type and weight.

How Velocity tests its hubs

Velocity USA offers hubs under its own name for road, gravel, mountain, touring, tandem and track use.

Warranty matches all Velocity products: defects in material and workmanship for the life of the product, excluding normal wear and tear, accidents, misuse, improper assembly or maintenance; repair or replacement at Velocity's discretion.

Everything in this section is published by Velocity. ProWheelBuilder is the wheel builder, not the tester, and the hub reaches us as the maker ships it.

Building it at ProWheelBuilder

Velocity Race makes the Velocity Race Road hub; ProWheelBuilder is an independent custom wheel builder in Georgia and not the manufacturer. Spokes are cut from the ERD we measure on the actual rim, the wheel comes up in stages on a tensiometer, and it is stress-relieved and trued before it goes in the box; tape and a valve go on if you ask.

The configurator filters to what fits, crosses out what is not made, and prices the build as you go.

Warranty

Velocity's warranty. Velocity warrants its rims against defects in material and workmanship for the life of the product, repairing or replacing at its option. Normal wear, accidents, misuse, improper assembly and poor maintenance are excluded.

ProWheelBuilder. Built into a wheel by us, this part is covered by our own one-year wheel warranty on top of the maker's. For a year we replace broken spokes whatever caused them, and we cover the labor on the wheel - truing, re-tensioning, a rebuild if it needs one. If a rim or hub fails and its maker covers it, we run that claim for you; if the maker says no, you get an eligible replacement rim or hub at 25% off retail. You pay the shipping each way. Wheels built from parts you send us are excluded.

Full terms are on our Policies & Warranty page.

Race Road Front Black Hub questions

Can I use this hub with disc brakes?

No - this is the rim-brake version and it has no rotor mount at all, which is exactly why it is lighter and simpler. It is the one for a rim-brake road, track or classic frame. A disc frame needs one of the disc versions of this hub, which are listed separately.

Which spokes and nipples suit the Velocity Race Road hub?

For most riders a double-butted spoke such as Sapim Race or DT Competition with brass nipples; lighter riders can go to Sapim Laser or CX-Ray. The configurator recommends a gauge and count for the Velocity Race Road hub from your bike type and weight.

What is the difference between the Race and Standard hubs?

The Race is lighter, with a thinner machined shell and lighter axle, and comes in colors; the Standard is the heavier, cheaper workhorse. Internals and flange spacing are similar.

Can I get the Race hub in a color to match my rim?

Yes. The factory anodises the Race hub in the same colors as its rims; the colors in stock are listed in the configurator.

Is ProWheelBuilder the manufacturer of the Velocity Race Road Front Black Hub?

No. The hub is made by Velocity; we are the wheel builder in Georgia who laces it into a finished wheel to your spec and stands behind the build.

Which axle spacing does it fit?

QR 5x100mm Front. Measure between the inside faces of your dropouts if you are unsure, or text us.

Does it need special spokes?

No. It takes standard J-bend spokes, which the configurator offers in every gauge and finish we stock.
