Velocity Standard Road Rear Hub
The Velocity Standard Road hub is the workhorse rim-brake road hub in Velocity USA's range: a machined aluminum shell, sealed cartridge bearings and a pawl freehub, assembled in Florida and priced so that the budget can go into the rim. This page covers the Velocity Standard Road Rear Hub, a 100mm front or 130mm rear quick-release hub for rim-brake road, touring and fixed-gear bikes.
The Standard Road hub is a little heavier than Velocity's Race Road hub and comes in black rather than the full color range, and in exchange it costs noticeably less. For a tough, serviceable road hub under a Deep V, Chukker, Dyad or A23, it is the sensible choice.
The Velocity Standard Road hub is sold here only inside a wheel we build. Choose the rim, spokes and nipples in the configurator and the finished wheel ships from Georgia laced, tensioned and trued by hand.
Design and construction
The Standard Road hubshell is machined from aluminum with conventional J-bend flanges. Bearings are sealed cartridge units in common sizes, so replacement years down the line is a ten-minute job with a bearing press. The rear freehub runs pawls on a hardened ratchet ring and takes a Shimano HG road body. The axle is a quick-release type in 100mm front and 130mm rear spacing.
Velocity USA assembles its hubs at the same Jacksonville, Florida facility where it makes its rims, which is why hub and rim colors match exactly and why the two are designed to be built together. The hubs use common cartridge bearing sizes and simple pawl freehubs that any shop can service, and spares stay available for years. Velocity assembles the Standard Road hub in Jacksonville, Florida, alongside its rims, and keeps bearings, freehub bodies and axle parts in stock for years, which is more than can be said for most budget hubs.
How it rides
A Velocity Standard Road hub rolls smoothly and quietly and asks for nothing. It suits road, commuting, touring and fixed-gear conversion wheels; the sealed bearings shrug off wet weather and the freehub engages promptly.
We build a lot of Standard Road wheels for riders replacing a worn factory wheel on a rim-brake bike who want something that will last.

This version
This version is the rim-brake hub in QR 5x130mm, drilled for 32h, 36h, 40h, about 415g, in black, silver. Those are the only things that differ between the versions of the Standard; the shell, bearings and seals are the same.
This is the rim-brake Standard, with no rotor mount at all: a lighter, simpler shell for road, track and classic frames that stop on the rim. It builds into the lightest wheel the model can make and it is the version to choose for a rim-brake bike; the disc versions of the same hub have their own listings.
Sizes, fit and compatibility
The Velocity Standard Road Rear Hub comes in the drillings listed on this page in 100mm front and 130mm rear quick-release spacing. It takes J-bend spokes in any gauge; we build most Standard Road wheels with DT Competition or Sapim Race spokes and brass nipples.
It pairs with the Velocity Deep V, Chukker, Dyad, A23 and Fusion, and with any rim-brake rim in the catalog that matches its drilling. The configurator recommends spoke count and lacing from your bike type and weight.
Build a wheel around it
Offered for road rim brake and touring builds in our Custom Wheel Program. Start with the Velocity Standard Road Rear Hub and the configurator pins it for you, then checks each choice you make against it.
How Velocity tests its hubs
Velocity USA offers hubs under its own name for road, gravel, mountain, touring, tandem and track use. Velocity's product pages do not state where the hubs are manufactured, and the company publishes no bearing-life, freehub-durability, sealing, load or fatigue test figures and no third-party certification for hubs; the specification tables on its hub pages (weight, bearings, axles) are blank and refer customers to the tech page.
Warranty matches all Velocity products: defects in material and workmanship for the life of the product, excluding normal wear and tear, accidents, misuse, improper assembly or maintenance; repair or replacement at Velocity's discretion.
Velocity states cassette-body pawls should be inspected and lubricated once a year or more depending on use and environment; cassette bodies come in Shimano, SRAM XD/XDR and Campagnolo fitments.

The figures, certificates and media above are Velocity's own. ProWheelBuilder does not run these tests; our part is the wheel we build on the hub.
Building it at ProWheelBuilder
Velocity makes the Standard; ProWheelBuilder is an independent custom wheel builder in Georgia and not the manufacturer. Spokes are cut from the ERD we measure on the actual rim, the wheel comes up in stages on a tensiometer, and it is stress-relieved and trued before it goes in the box; tape and a valve go on if you ask.
The configurator filters to what fits, crosses out what is not made, and prices the build as you go.
Warranty
Velocity's warranty. Velocity warrants its rims against defects in material and workmanship for the life of the product, repairing or replacing at its option. Normal wear, accidents, misuse, improper assembly and poor maintenance are excluded.
ProWheelBuilder. Any wheel we build on this part carries ProWheelBuilder's one-year warranty in addition to the manufacturer's. Broken spokes are replaced for a year whatever the cause, and all wheel-side labor is included - truing, re-tensioning, rebuilding. Where the maker covers a failed rim or hub we handle that claim for you; where they decline, an eligible replacement comes at 25% off current retail. The customer covers shipping in both directions. Components supplied by the customer are not covered.

Standard Road Rear Hub questions
Can I use this hub with disc brakes?
No - this is the rim-brake version and it has no rotor mount at all, which is exactly why it is lighter and simpler. It is the one for a rim-brake road, track or classic frame. A disc frame needs one of the disc versions of this hub, which are listed separately.
Standard Road or Race Road hub?
The Race Road is lighter and comes in colors; the Standard Road is cheaper and black. Both are reliable sealed-bearing hubs.
Which freehub body does the Standard Road take?
Shimano HG road, which fits Shimano and SRAM road cassettes up to 11-speed.
Is the Standard Road hub disc compatible?
No. It is a rim-brake hub; for disc road choose the Velocity Race disc hub or a Bitex BX 106.
Is the Standard Road hub good for touring?
Yes. Its sealed bearings and 36-hole drilling make it a common choice under a Dyad or Atlas touring wheel.
Is ProWheelBuilder the manufacturer of the Velocity Standard Road Rear Hub?
No. Velocity makes the hub. ProWheelBuilder is an independent custom wheel builder in Georgia that builds it into a finished wheel to your spec.
Which axle spacing does it fit?
QR 5x130mm Rear. Measure between the inside faces of your dropouts if you are unsure, or text us.
