Velocity Race Road Rear Black Hub
The Velocity Race Road hub is the rim-brake road version of Velocity's lighter hub line, assembled in Florida with a machined aluminum shell, sealed cartridge bearings and a pawl freehub, and anodized in the same colors as the rims. This page covers the Velocity Race Road Rear Black Hub, a 100mm front or 130mm rear quick-release road hub for rim-brake bikes.
Rim-brake road hubs in colors are hard to find now, and the Race Road hub is the one we build when a customer wants a classic road or fixed-gear wheel on a Deep V, Fusion, A23 or Quill that matches from hub to rim.
The Race Road hub comes from us only as a finished wheel: pick the rim, spokes and nipples, and we lace, tension and true it by hand in Georgia before it ships.
Design and construction
The Race hubshell is machined from aluminum bar with conventional J-bend flanges and anodized in the color range. Bearings are sealed cartridge units in common sizes, replaceable with a bearing press when they eventually wear. The rear freehub runs pawls on a hardened ratchet ring for prompt engagement and swaps between Shimano HG, SRAM XD and Micro Spline bodies. End caps convert the Race hub between thru-axle and quick-release standards, and the configurator lists the axle and driver options for the version on this page.
How it rides
A Velocity Race hub is quiet and undramatic. Engagement is quick enough for technical trail climbing, the bearings spin freely, and the seals keep grit out. It is happy under cross-country, trail and gravel use; for enduro, downhill or e-bike torque we would steer you to a heavier-duty hub.
The main reason to choose the Race hub over a DT Swiss 350 or Bitex is the color match with the rims, and a wheel built that way looks like it was made as a set because it was.

About this listing
What sets this listing apart from the other Velocity Race Road hub versions: rim-brake rotor mount, QR 5x130mm, 24h, 28h, 32h drilling, about 255g, in black. Pick the one that matches your frame and rotor and the rest of the hub is identical.
This is the rim-brake Velocity Race Road hub, with no rotor mount at all: a lighter, simpler shell for road, track and classic frames that stop on the rim. It builds into the lightest wheel the model can make and it is the version to choose for a rim-brake bike; the disc versions of the same hub have their own listings.
Sizes, fit and compatibility
The Velocity Race Road Rear Black Hub comes in the drillings listed on this page in 100mm front and 130mm rear quick-release spacing. It takes J-bend spokes in any gauge; we build most Race Road hub wheels with Sapim Laser, D-Light or CX-Ray spokes or DT Competition and Aerolite.
It pairs naturally with the Velocity Deep V, Fusion, A23, Quill and Aerohead, and with any other rim-brake rim in the catalog that matches its drilling. Pick your bike type and weight in the configurator and it recommends a spoke count and lacing pattern.
Build a wheel around it
Offered for road rim brake, track and road single-speed and touring builds in our Custom Wheel Program. Start with the Velocity Race Road Rear Black Hub and the configurator pins it for you, then checks each choice you make against it.
Testing, standards and warranty at Velocity
Velocity USA offers hubs under its own name for road, gravel, mountain, touring, tandem and track use. Velocity's product pages do not state where the hubs are manufactured, and the company publishes no bearing-life, freehub-durability, sealing, load or fatigue test figures and no third-party certification for hubs; the specification tables on its hub pages (weight, bearings, axles) are blank and refer customers to the tech page.
Velocity states cassette-body pawls should be inspected and lubricated once a year or more depending on use and environment; cassette bodies come in Shimano, SRAM XD/XDR and Campagnolo fitments.
What Velocity does state: most hubs use cartridge bearings "with weather-resistant seals", and Race hubs add "double-bearing seals for added protection." Bearing preloads are set at the factory with no need for adjustment. Velocity cautions that "Sealed does not mean waterproof" - bearings that are submerged, pressure-washed or otherwise waterlogged should be serviced or replaced by a professional mechanic, and service depends on hub type. Velocity sells replacement sealed cartridge bearings in 6001, 6802 and 6902 sizes, offers loose-ball bearings as an option on custom wheels, and ships mountain disc hubs with parts to convert between 9 mm quick-release, 12 mm and 15 mm thru-axle.

Building it at ProWheelBuilder
Velocity Race makes the Velocity Race Road hub; ProWheelBuilder is an independent custom wheel builder in Georgia and not the manufacturer. We measure the rim before we cut a spoke, bring the wheel up in three or four rounds with a gauge, stress-relieve it between rounds and true it last, then tape it and fit a valve if you want it tubeless.
Only compatible hubs and spokes appear in the configurator, impossible combinations are struck through rather than hidden, and the price is live.
Warranty
Velocity's warranty. Velocity warrants its rims against defects in material and workmanship for the life of the product, repairing or replacing at its option. Normal wear, accidents, misuse, improper assembly and poor maintenance are excluded.
ProWheelBuilder. Wheels we build around this part are covered by our own one-year warranty alongside the maker's. Within the year: broken spokes replaced regardless of cause, and the labor on the wheel - truing, re-tensioning or a complete rebuild - included. A manufacturer-covered rim or hub failure is a claim we make and manage for you; one they will not cover is answered with an eligible replacement at 25% off retail. Shipping each way is yours. Parts you supply yourself fall outside it.
Full terms are on our Policies & Warranty page.
Race Road Rear Black Hub questions
Can I use this hub with disc brakes?
No - this is the rim-brake version and it has no rotor mount at all, which is exactly why it is lighter and simpler. It is the one for a rim-brake road, track or classic frame. A disc frame needs one of the disc versions of this hub, which are listed separately.
Which spokes and nipples suit the Velocity Race Road hub?
For most riders a double-butted spoke such as Sapim Race or DT Competition with brass nipples; lighter riders can go to Sapim Laser or CX-Ray. The configurator recommends a gauge and count for the Velocity Race Road hub from your bike type and weight.
What is the difference between the Race and Standard hubs?
The Race is lighter, with a thinner machined shell and lighter axle, and comes in colors; the Standard is the heavier, cheaper workhorse. Internals and flange spacing are similar.
Which freehub bodies fit the Race hub?
Shimano HG, SRAM XD and Shimano Micro Spline, selectable in the configurator for the rear hub.
Can I get the Race hub in a color to match my rim?
Yes. The factory anodises the Race hub in the same colors as its rims; the colors in stock are listed in the configurator.
Is the Race hub e-bike rated?
No. For e-bikes choose a hub with a full-contact or steel-reinforced freehub such as a DT Swiss 350 or Hope Pro 5.
Which axle spacing does it fit?
QR 5x130mm Rear. Measure between the inside faces of your dropouts if you are unsure, or text us.
