White Industries CLD Rear Centerlock Disc Hub

The White Industries CLD is the centerlock disc hub from a company that has been machining hubs in Petaluma, California for more than thirty years, and it is the White Industries hub we build most. CLD stands for Center Lock Disc; the hub has four sealed Enduro cartridge bearings, a titanium freehub body that does not gouge under a cassette, 48 points of engagement from a three-pawl driver, and end caps that convert it between 12mm thru-axle and quick release for road, gravel, touring and MTB use. It is machined from 6061 aluminum, anodized in a range of colors, and rebuildable for life. This page covers the White Industries CLD Rear Centerlock Disc Hub.

The CLD comes from us only as a finished wheel: pick the rim, spokes and nipples, and we lace, tension and true it by hand in Georgia before it ships.

Design and construction

White Industries machines the CLD shell and axle from 6061 bar in Petaluma and assembles it around Enduro sealed cartridge bearings, four in the rear hub so the freehub and the shell each ride on a pair. The freehub body is titanium, which is the detail wheel builders love: an aluminum freehub gets notched by cassette cogs within a season, a steel one is heavy, and titanium is neither. The driver runs three pawls on a 48-tooth ring for 7.5 degrees of engagement, quick enough for gravel and trail and quiet in use. Rotors mount by centerlock, end caps swap for 12 x 100 and 12 x 142 thru-axle or quick release, and the CLD+ version covers Boost MTB spacing.

Every part is replaceable and White Industries still stocks spares for hubs it made decades ago. Anodized colors match its cranks and headsets.

The logos are engraved after anodising rather than before, cutting back through the color to the bare aluminum underneath. It is why the lettering on a White Industries hub stays crisp and keeps its contrast instead of softening as the finish ages.

How it rides

A CLD is smooth, quiet and permanent. The Enduro bearings roll freely for years, the titanium freehub takes a decade of cassette swaps without a mark, and the 48-point engagement is quick enough that you never think about it. It is the hub we suggest for a road, gravel or touring disc wheel that the customer intends to keep, and for anyone who wants an American-made hub in a color.

For instant engagement an Industry Nine SOLiX or Onyx Vesper is the step up; for the same job in black at a lower price the DT Swiss 350.

About this listing

What sets this listing apart from the other CLD versions: centerlock rotor mount, QR 5x135mm, Thru Axle 12x142mm, 24h, 28h, 32h, 36h drilling, about 280g, in polished, black, blue, gold, pink, purple, red. Pick the one that matches your frame and rotor and the rest of the hub is identical.

Centerlock is the lighter, quicker rotor mount: a splined rotor drops onto the hub and a single lockring holds it, so a rotor swap takes a minute with a lockring tool and there are no six small bolts to torque or lose. Shimano and most current road and gravel rotors are centerlock; 6-bolt rotors fit with an adapter.

Sizes, fit and compatibility

The White Industries CLD Rear Centerlock Disc Hub comes in the drillings listed on this page with the axle and driver options shown in the configurator. Centerlock rotors. J-bend spokes in any gauge; we build most CLD wheels with Sapim CX-Ray, Laser or Race spokes or DT Aerolite and Competition and brass or alloy nipples.

It pairs naturally with HED Belgium, Boyd Altamont and CCC, DT Swiss RR and GR, Velocity Aileron, ENVE G-Series, Reserve and Nox gravel rims that match its drilling. Pick your bike type and weight in the configurator and it recommends a spoke count and lacing pattern.

Build it with us

We build this hub to order. Open the Custom Wheel Program with the White Industries CLD Rear Centerlock Disc Hub already selected and pick the parts around it; it is offered for gravel and road disc, mountain bike, fat bike and touring builds, and the configurator will not let you assemble a combination we would not build.

Testing, standards and warranty at White Industries

White Industries states that every hub is CNC-machined, hand-assembled, and inspected in its Petaluma, California facility, keeping “machining, assembly, quality control, and operations under one roof”. Founded in 1978 with about 20 employees, the company says it has been designing, machining, assembling, and testing components in Northern California for more than four decades in a 100% solar-powered shop using domestically sourced raw materials. It publishes no load, fatigue, or salt-spray test figures.

The Warranty & Returns page states a limited five-year warranty to the original owner, excluding normal wear, misuse, improper installation, and labor; proof of purchase is required and return shipping is covered within 90 days of purchase. Older instruction pages still cite one year, with bearings 60 days.

CLD and T11 rear hubs use a 6Al-4V titanium freehub body, 3 heat-treated steel pawls with stainless steel leaf springs, and 48-tooth (7.5-degree) engagement on a heat-treated black-oxide 4130 steel axle. Freehub bodies are interchangeable; service instructions say pawl pockets get light oil or dry lube, never grease.

The figures, certificates and media above are White Industries's own. ProWheelBuilder does not run these tests; our part is the wheel we build on the hub.

Building it at ProWheelBuilder

White Industries makes the CLD in Petaluma, California; ProWheelBuilder is an independent custom wheel builder in Georgia and not the manufacturer. We measure the rim before we cut a spoke, bring the wheel up in three or four rounds with a gauge, stress-relieve it between rounds and true it last, then tape it and fit a valve if you want it tubeless.

Only compatible hubs and spokes appear in the configurator, impossible combinations are struck through rather than hidden, and the price is live.

Boost or standard CLD?

This is the standard 142mm CLD, for frames built before Boost spacing or deliberately to it. Same hub, same 280g, same CLD internals as the Boost version - the difference is where the flanges sit and how wide the frame has to be to accept it.

It will not fit a 148mm Boost frame. If your frame is Boost, take that listing instead; if you are not sure which you have, measure between the inside faces of the dropouts and tell us, or send a photo and we will work it out.

Warranty

Manufacturer's warranty. White Industries warrants this product against defects in materials and workmanship. The duration, conditions and claim process are set by White Industries and can change without notice, so ask us and we will confirm the current terms before you buy.

ProWheelBuilder. Any wheel we build on this part carries ProWheelBuilder's one-year warranty in addition to the manufacturer's. Broken spokes are replaced for a year whatever the cause, and all wheel-side labor is included - truing, re-tensioning, rebuilding. Where the maker covers a failed rim or hub we handle that claim for you; where they decline, an eligible replacement comes at 25% off current retail. The customer covers shipping in both directions. Components supplied by the customer are not covered.

Full terms are on our Policies & Warranty page.

CLD Rear Centerlock Disc Hub questions

Will my rotors fit this hub?

This is the centerlock version, so a splined centerlock rotor drops on and a lockring holds it - one tool, no six bolts to torque or lose. If your rotors are 6-bolt they will fit with a centerlock adapter, or take the 6-bolt version of the same hub, which is a separate listing.

CLD or XMR?

CLD is the centerlock disc hub; XMR is the 6-bolt disc hub. Same internals, same titanium freehub; pick by your rotor type.

Which freehub bodies fit the CLD?

Shimano HG (titanium), SRAM XDR and Shimano Micro Spline, selectable in the configurator.

Is the CLD Boost compatible?

The standard CLD is 12 x 100 and 12 x 142; the CLD+ is the Boost version. Pick the one that matches your frame.

Why a titanium freehub?

Cassette cogs notch an aluminum freehub within a season; titanium does not mark and weighs less than steel.

Which axle spacing does it fit?

QR 5x135mm Rear or Thru Axle 12x142mm Rear. Measure between the inside faces of your dropouts if you are unsure, or text us.

Does it need special spokes?

No. It takes standard J-bend spokes, which the configurator offers in every gauge and finish we stock.
