White Industries XMR Rear ISO 6 Bolt Disc Tandem Hub

The White Industries XMR is the 6-bolt disc hub from Petaluma, California, and the letters tell you what it is for: Cross, Mountain, Road. It has a 17mm-axle front that converts between 9 x 100 quick release, 12 x 100 and 15 x 100 thru-axle, a 15mm-axle rear in 10 x 135 quick release or 12 x 142 thru-axle, four Enduro sealed bearings in the rear, a titanium freehub body and 48 points of engagement, all machined from 6061 aluminum and anodized in White Industries' colors. The XMR+ covers Boost spacing. This page covers the White Industries XMR Rear ISO 6 Bolt Disc Tandem Hub.

The XMR is sold here only inside a wheel we build. Choose the rim, spokes and nipples in the configurator and the finished wheel ships from Georgia laced, tensioned and trued by hand.

Design and construction

The XMR is cut from 6061 bar in Petaluma around a 17mm front axle and a 15mm rear, which is what lets one hub cover so many frames: the front converts between 9 x 100 quick release, 12 x 100 and 15 x 100 thru-axle on end caps alone, and the rear between 10 x 135 quick release and 12 x 142. Four Enduro sealed cartridge bearings carry the rear, so the freehub and the shell each ride on a pair, and the freehub body is titanium rather than aluminum so a cassette cannot notch it.

White Industries recycles every aluminum chip the machining produces rather than scrapping it, which is the sort of housekeeping a shop only bothers with when it owns the whole process.

How it rides

An XMR is smooth, quiet and built for life, and the XMR's convertible axles mean the hub moves from bike to bike as standards change. The oversized axles make a stiff wheel, the titanium freehub takes years of cassette swaps, and the 48-point engagement suits cyclocross, gravel and trail riding. It is the hub we suggest for a 6-bolt disc bike that wants an American-made hub in a color; for centerlock rotors the CLD is the same hub with a different mount.

This version

This version is the 6-bolt hub in QR 5x145mm Tandem, drilled for 32h, 36h, 40h, 48h, about 318g, in polished, black. Those are the only things that differ between the versions of the XMR; the shell, bearings and seals are the same.

Six-bolt is the original disc mount and still the most universal: any ISO 6-bolt rotor from any brand bolts straight on, rotors are cheap and easy to find anywhere, and the six-bolt flange is a robust, simple interface that has been on mountain bikes for twenty-five years. Centerlock rotors do not fit it.

Sizes, fit and compatibility

The White Industries XMR Rear ISO 6 Bolt Disc Tandem Hub comes in the drillings listed on this page with the axle and driver options shown in the configurator. Six-bolt rotors. J-bend spokes in any gauge; we build most XMR and XMR+ wheels with Sapim Race, D-Light or CX-Ray spokes or DT Competition and brass nipples.

It pairs naturally with Stan's, WTB, DT Swiss, Velocity, Nox and Reserve rims that match its drilling. The configurator recommends spoke count and lacing from your bike type and weight.

Build it with us

We build this hub to order. Open the Custom Wheel Program with the White Industries XMR Rear ISO 6 Bolt Disc Tandem Hub already selected and pick the parts around it; it is offered for tandem and e-bike builds, and the configurator will not let you assemble a combination we would not build.

How White Industries tests its hubs

White Industries states that every hub is CNC-machined, hand-assembled, and inspected in its Petaluma, California facility, keeping “machining, assembly, quality control, and operations under one roof”. Founded in 1978 with about 20 employees, the company says it has been designing, machining, assembling, and testing components in Northern California for more than four decades in a 100% solar-powered shop using domestically sourced raw materials. It publishes no load, fatigue, or salt-spray test figures.

The Warranty & Returns page states a limited five-year warranty to the original owner, excluding normal wear, misuse, improper installation, and labor; proof of purchase is required and return shipping is covered within 90 days of purchase. Older instruction pages still cite one year, with bearings 60 days.

CLD and T11 rear hubs use a 6Al-4V titanium freehub body, 3 heat-treated steel pawls with stainless steel leaf springs, and 48-tooth (7.5-degree) engagement on a heat-treated black-oxide 4130 steel axle. Freehub bodies are interchangeable; service instructions say pawl pockets get light oil or dry lube, never grease.

Everything in this section is published by White Industries. ProWheelBuilder is the wheel builder, not the tester, and the hub reaches us as the maker ships it.

Building it at ProWheelBuilder

White Industries makes the XMR; ProWheelBuilder is an independent custom wheel builder in Georgia and not the manufacturer. Spokes are cut from the ERD we measure on the actual rim, the wheel comes up in stages on a tensiometer, and it is stress-relieved and trued before it goes in the box; tape and a valve go on if you ask.

The configurator filters to what fits, crosses out what is not made, and prices the build as you go.

Warranty

Manufacturer's warranty. White Industries warrants this product against defects in materials and workmanship. The duration, conditions and claim process are set by White Industries and can change without notice, so ask us and we will confirm the current terms before you buy.

ProWheelBuilder. Any wheel we build on this part carries ProWheelBuilder's one-year warranty in addition to the manufacturer's. Broken spokes are replaced for a year whatever the cause, and all wheel-side labor is included - truing, re-tensioning, rebuilding. Where the maker covers a failed rim or hub we handle that claim for you; where they decline, an eligible replacement comes at 25% off current retail. The customer covers shipping in both directions. Components supplied by the customer are not covered.

Full terms are on our Policies & Warranty page.

XMR Rear ISO 6 Bolt Disc Tandem Hub questions

Will my rotors fit this hub?

This is the 6-bolt version: any ISO 6-bolt rotor bolts straight on with six T25 bolts, which is still the most common and the easiest rotor to replace anywhere. Centerlock rotors do not fit it - for those, take the centerlock version of the same hub, listed separately.

Which spokes and nipples suit the XMR?

For most riders a double-butted spoke such as Sapim Race or DT Competition with brass nipples; lighter riders can go to Sapim Laser or CX-Ray. The configurator recommends a gauge and count for the XMR from your bike type and weight.

CLD or XMR?

CLD is the centerlock disc hub; XMR is the 6-bolt disc hub. Same internals, same titanium freehub; pick by your rotor type.

Which freehub bodies fit the CLD?

Shimano HG (titanium), SRAM XDR and Shimano Micro Spline, selectable in the configurator.

Why a titanium freehub?

Cassette cogs notch an aluminum freehub within a season; titanium does not mark and weighs less than steel.

Is ProWheelBuilder the manufacturer of the White Industries XMR Rear ISO 6 Bolt Disc Tandem Hub?

No. The hub is made by White Industries; we are the wheel builder in Georgia who laces it into a finished wheel to your spec and stands behind the build.

Which axle spacing does it fit?

QR 5x145mm Tandem Rear. Measure between the inside faces of your dropouts if you are unsure, or text us.

Not sure? Text or leave a voicemail on 470-253-0929 or email info@prowheelbuilder.com — you will be talking to the people who build the wheels.
