Velocity Standard 135MM Rear Black Hub
The Velocity Standard 135mm hub is the rim-brake rear hub in Velocity USA's workhorse range spaced for 135mm frames: touring bikes, hybrids, older mountain bikes and any frame that uses mountain-bike rear spacing with rim brakes. It has a machined aluminum shell, sealed cartridge bearings and a pawl freehub, assembled in Florida and priced sensibly. This page covers the Velocity Standard 135MM Rear Black Hub.
A 135mm rim-brake rear hub is a niche part now, and the Standard 135mm is one of the few sealed-bearing options we can still build a proper touring or hybrid wheel on.
The Velocity Standard 135mm hub is not sold bare. You choose the rim and the rest of the build in the configurator, and it ships from our shop in Georgia laced, tensioned and trued by hand. We build it most often with 36 spokes onto a Velocity Dyad or Atlas for a touring or hybrid rear wheel that will outlast the rest of the bike, and the sealed bearings mean a season of wet commuting does not turn into a rebuild.
Design and construction
The Standard Road hubshell is machined from aluminum with conventional J-bend flanges. Bearings are sealed cartridge units in common sizes, so replacement years down the line is a ten-minute job with a bearing press. The rear freehub runs pawls on a hardened ratchet ring and takes a Shimano HG road body. The axle is a quick-release type in 100mm front and 130mm rear spacing.
How it rides
A Velocity Standard Road hub rolls smoothly and quietly and asks for nothing. It suits road, commuting, touring and fixed-gear conversion wheels; the sealed bearings shrug off wet weather and the freehub engages promptly.
We build a lot of Standard Road wheels for riders replacing a worn factory wheel on a rim-brake bike who want something that will last.

This listing
This is the rim-brake version: QR 5x135mm, 32h, 36h drilling, about 400g, in black. Same internals and flanges as every other Standard 135mm; only the mount and axle differ.
This is the rim-brake Standard 135mm, with no rotor mount at all: a lighter, simpler shell for road, track and classic frames that stop on the rim. It builds into the lightest wheel the model can make and it is the version to choose for a rim-brake bike; the disc versions of the same hub have their own listings.
Sizes, fit and compatibility
The Velocity Standard 135MM Rear Black Hub comes in the drillings listed on this page in 135mm quick-release spacing with a Shimano HG freehub body. It takes J-bend spokes in any gauge; we build most Standard 135mm wheels with DT Champion or Competition spokes and brass nipples.
It pairs with the Velocity Dyad, Atlas, Chukker and Cliffhanger rim-brake rims, and with any rim-brake rim in the catalog that matches its drilling. Pick touring or hybrid as your bike type in the configurator and it recommends a spoke count and lacing pattern.

What Velocity says about testing
Velocity USA offers hubs under its own name for road, gravel, mountain, touring, tandem and track use. Velocity's product pages do not state where the hubs are manufactured, and the company publishes no bearing-life, freehub-durability, sealing, load or fatigue test figures and no third-party certification for hubs; the specification tables on its hub pages (weight, bearings, axles) are blank and refer customers to the tech page.
Warranty matches all Velocity products: defects in material and workmanship for the life of the product, excluding normal wear and tear, accidents, misuse, improper assembly or maintenance; repair or replacement at Velocity's discretion.
Velocity states cassette-body pawls should be inspected and lubricated once a year or more depending on use and environment; cassette bodies come in Shimano, SRAM XD/XDR and Campagnolo fitments.

Building it at ProWheelBuilder
Velocity makes the Standard 135mm; ProWheelBuilder is an independent custom wheel builder in Georgia and not the manufacturer. Every Standard 135mm wheel we build gets spokes cut from the measured ERD of the rim, staged tensioning with a gauge, stress relief and a final true before it ships.
In the configurator you will only see parts that fit this drilling; combinations that are not made are struck through, and the price updates as you pick.
Warranty
Velocity's warranty. Velocity warrants its rims against defects in material and workmanship for the life of the product, repairing or replacing at its option. Normal wear, accidents, misuse, improper assembly and poor maintenance are excluded.
ProWheelBuilder. Any wheel we build on this part carries ProWheelBuilder's one-year warranty in addition to the manufacturer's. Broken spokes are replaced for a year whatever the cause, and all wheel-side labor is included - truing, re-tensioning, rebuilding. Where the maker covers a failed rim or hub we handle that claim for you; where they decline, an eligible replacement comes at 25% off current retail. The customer covers shipping in both directions. Components supplied by the customer are not covered.
Full terms are on our Policies & Warranty page.
Standard 135MM Rear Black Hub questions
Can I use this hub with disc brakes?
No - this is the rim-brake version and it has no rotor mount at all, which is exactly why it is lighter and simpler. It is the one for a rim-brake road, track or classic frame. A disc frame needs one of the disc versions of this hub, which are listed separately.
Which spokes and nipples suit the Standard 135mm?
For most riders a double-butted spoke such as Sapim Race or DT Competition with brass nipples; lighter riders can go to Sapim Laser or CX-Ray. The configurator recommends a gauge and count for the Standard 135mm from your bike type and weight.
Standard Road or Race Road hub?
The Race Road is lighter and comes in colors; the Standard Road is cheaper and black. Both are reliable sealed-bearing hubs.
Which freehub body does the Standard Road take?
Shimano HG road, which fits Shimano and SRAM road cassettes up to 11-speed.
Is the Standard Road hub good for touring?
Yes. Its sealed bearings and 36-hole drilling make it a common choice under a Dyad or Atlas touring wheel.
Which axle spacing does it fit?
QR 5x135mm Rear. Measure between the inside faces of your dropouts if you are unsure, or text us.
Does it need special spokes?
No. It takes standard J-bend spokes, which the configurator offers in every gauge and finish we stock.
