White Industries Lock Ring

The lockring is the small part that makes a fixed-gear wheel safe to ride. The cog threads on in the direction you pedal; the lockring threads on the opposite way, so the very force that could unwind the cog - backpedalling to slow down - tightens the lockring against it instead.

Design and construction

It is a part worth buying properly. A rounded-out or soft lockring is the usual reason a fixed cog comes loose, and the consequence of that on a bike with no freewheel is not a mechanical inconvenience. Steel, about 10g, cut to take a proper lockring spanner so the notches survive being done up to a real torque and undone again later.

Everything White Industries sells is cut in Petaluma, California, in the shop Doug White opened in 1978. Keeping the machining in-house is what lets them hold tolerances on a part this small and keep supporting it long after it was sold; it also means the box it arrives in is recyclable, which is the sort of detail that follows from caring about the rest.

Fit and compatibility

For fixed-gear hubs carrying the standard reverse-threaded lockring fitting. If you are building a track or fixed wheel with us, we will fit and torque it as part of the build.

Fixed gear lock ring questions

Why is the thread backwards?

So that backpedalling tightens it. If it threaded the same way as the cog, the act of slowing down would gradually undo it.

Do I need one if I run a splined cog?

Tell us the hub and cog you are using and we will confirm what retains it - the answer depends on the interface.
