DT Swiss RWS MTB 10mm 135mm Thru Bolt Skewer Rear
The DT Swiss rear thru-bolt mountain skewer, in alloy. It closes by threading rather than by a cam flipping over center, which changes two things: the clamping force is set by how far you thread it rather than by how someone adjusted the nut, and the lever can then be folded to any position you like.
What it does
The RWS idea is that a wheel retention device should behave like a fastener rather than a mechanism. You thread it until it is solid, which is repeatable, instead of judging an over-center action by feel.
It is also kinder to the dropout faces. A cam drags across them as it goes over center, where a threaded closure pulls straight, which on a soft alloy or carbon dropout is the difference between marks and no marks.
What DT Swiss is unusual for is supporting what it sold. Hubs from several generations back are still serviceable with parts you can order, which is the context for a tool like this: it exists so a hub can be kept rather than replaced.
Fit and compatibility
Intended for a 135mm rear hub taking a 10mm thru bolt. We can check it against your hub if you are having the wheels built here.
How we use it at ProWheelBuilder
The lever position question comes up constantly on disc builds, and this is the answer to it: tighten, then park the lever somewhere it cannot be levered open.
ProWheelBuilder is an independent wheel builder in Georgia. DT Swiss designs and manufactures this; we use it, we stock it, and we are happy to say whether it is the one you need before you buy it.
Warranty
DT Swiss's warranty. DT Swiss covers its products against material and manufacturing defects for 24 months from purchase, excluding wear parts such as bearings and tubeless tape. Carbon rims and carbon wheels bought new since 1 January 2020 carry an extended guarantee to the first owner against defects in material and workmanship, and DT Swiss runs a paid crash-replacement scheme on carbon wheels for up to ten years from purchase.
ProWheelBuilder. Tools and accessories sit outside ProWheelBuilder's one-year wheel warranty, which applies to the wheels we lace. Cover for this item is the manufacturer's.

DT Swiss RWS MTB 10mm 135mm Thru Bolt Skewer Rear questions
Is a threaded skewer safer than a cam?
It is more consistent, which amounts to the same thing in practice: the clamp depends on the thread rather than on how a cam was adjusted.
Does the lever position matter?
Only for convenience, which is the whole point. Thread it closed, then fold the lever clear of the rotor, the fork and anything else that might knock it.
Is ProWheelBuilder the manufacturer of the DT Swiss RWS MTB 10mm 135mm Thru Bolt Skewer Rear?
DT Swiss makes it. ProWheelBuilder builds wheels in Georgia and is a customer of theirs, not the manufacturer.
