Shimano Hubs Custom Hand Built Wheels

Custom hand built wheels with Shimano hubs

Shimano's cup-and-cone bearings remain adjustable and rebuildable long after a sealed cartridge would have been thrown away, which is a real argument for them in a wheel meant to last.

We lace Shimano hubs to the rim of your choice and build the wheel by hand in our Georgia shop - tensioned evenly, trued flat and round, and stress-relieved before it ships. Spoke lengths are calculated from the measured flange geometry of your exact hub, not estimated from the model name.

The Shimano hubs we build with

  • Spoke headJ-bend
  • Axle spacings100mm, 120mm, 124mm, 130mm, 135mm, 142mm
  • Also available6-bolt rotor mount, Center Lock rotor mount, disc brake, dynamo, track / fixed

These are J-bend hubs, which take standard J-bend spokes - the widest choice of gauge, color and material, and the easiest to source anywhere in the world if you ever break one far from home.

Axle spacing has to match your frame or fork, and it is the single most common thing people get wrong when ordering a wheel. We build Shimano hubs in 100mm, 120mm, 124mm, 130mm, 135mm, 142mm. If you are unsure what your frame takes, measure the inside faces of the dropouts before you order, or text us and we will work it out with you.

What to pair with a Shimano hub

A wheel is a system: the rim decides the tire and the braking, the hub decides the drivetrain and the axle fit, and the spokes have to suit both. Start from whichever end matters most to you and the configurator will keep the other end compatible.

Shimano custom wheel questions

Can you build a wheel with a Shimano hub I already own?

Yes. Choose the supply-your-own hub option in the configurator, ship it to us, and we will lace it into a new wheel with new spokes cut to the right length for that exact hub. You pay for the parts you need and the build labor.

Which axle spacing do I need?

Whatever your frame or fork takes - we build Shimano hubs in 100mm, 120mm, 124mm, 130mm, 135mm, 142mm. Measure between the inside faces of your dropouts if you are unsure, or text us and we will work it out from your bike.

Can a Shimano hub be relaced into a new rim later?

Yes, and it is one of the better arguments for a quality hub. When the rim wears out or cracks, send us the wheel and we will build the hub into a new rim with new spokes. Spokes are not reused - they have taken a set at the old rim's dimensions.

How long will my Shimano wheel take?

Build time comes down to parts availability rather than bench time. Your estimated ship date is shown in the configurator before you check out, so you know the date before you pay.

Not sure what to pick? Text or leave a voicemail on 470-253-0929 or email info@prowheelbuilder.com — you will be talking to the people who build the wheels.
